General Dynamics Electric Boat

North Kingstown, RI

The project consists of the structural engineering and design of a new building facility to house the manufacturing and construction of the latest class of nuclear submarines for the United States Navy. The new facility includes three production bays with spans ranging from 120ft to 230ft each supporting 60-ton bridge cranes.

Responsible for the design of a three-story 60,000 square-foot office facility located at the end of the production hall, as well as several multi-tiered mezzanines within the facility to ensure production access to different elevations of the work levels.

Our design approach and techniques resulted in a substantial steel tonnage reduction and cost savings compared to a similar building recently completed by another design-build team for this Owner.

The new facility includes:

  • Three production bays with spans ranging from 120ft to 230ft each supporting 60-ton bridge cranes.

  • Production doors for the buildings are extremely large and specially designed door systems to accommodate the transit of a nuclear submarine’s hull.

  • The mat foundation is designed to accommodate the significant structural loads imposed by the carts and stanchions used to vertically support the weight of a submarine. In addition to the production facility.
