OVERVIEW

Mainstay provided structural engineering consultation during the fit-out phase of the Merck Building 12A project which included the analysis and design of an interstitial level between the second and third floors. The interstitial level was introduced in order to accommodate the installation of the robot and clean rooms below while providing a construction and maintenance level for MEP systems above. The interstitial level allowed for parallel construction of clean space below and service distribution above reducing the overall construction schedule by as much as 8 weeks.

Mainstay designed the interstitial level as a hung framing system to avoid post interference at the second level program spaces. The interstitial level required removable sections along the installation path of the robots and at required access locations above clean rooms. The interstitial is constructed with galvanized gauge metal deck on steel channel framing supported by angle hangers attached to the third floor building structure. Lateral tie connections back to the existing building structure eliminated the need for diagonal bracing.
